Top family accommodation in Europe

Finding places that will accommodate the four of us can be really hard. Here are our Top Europe family accommodation recommendations that we have stayed in while on our travels!. These family accommodation options are all mid-range and budget friendly. In great locations for family travel exploring.

BERLIN:
IBIS STYLES ALEXANDERPLATZ

Ibis Styles Alexanderplatz is located in a great position just off the large communist area square that is called Alexanderplatz. Alexanderplatz encompasses many shopping and eating opportunities for all budgets. There are McDonalds, KFC and the like for kids, Hofbrau Munich for the adults, as well as many other little eateries (There was one called Asia Gourmet and it was magnificent, definitely one of our favourites!).  A tram stop is located just outside the front door of the Ibis Styles and Alexanderplatz U-Bahn station has connections to all parts of the city, making getting around Berlin a breeze. Free coffee is available in the lounge where beer can also be purchased and we found the breakfast buffet was amazing. We highly recommend the breakfast as an add-on to your stay. Berlin 360 TV Tower is located just 170 meters away. Our room was large enough for a double bed and two singles, with ample space for suitcases. This made the girls happy as they could also have a small space on the floor to play rather than messing up their beds before bedtime every night. There was also a small cupboard to house our backpacks and shoes just inside the doorway which made it easy to get going in the morning.

Why we loved it:

I loved Ibis Styles because it was clean, it had easy access to all parts of Berlin that we wanted to go to and there was so much variety around us. It was easy to find food for the girls and for us as well. It also had a great breakfast that we all enjoyed!

Features:

  • Airconditioning
  • Safe deposit boxes
  • Laundry
  • Vending machines

ZAKOPANE POLAND

Za Wnukiem

Za Wnukiem is family owned accommodation. The lovely hosts have turned the top floor of their house into 6 rooms that all contain a shower and toilet facilities in each room. A fridge and TV are also available for you to use in your room. Outside the house, there is a small playground for kids, BBQ facilities and a pergola for adults to sit in while watching the kids play. It is well closed in and set well away from traffic, so the children can play with no worry. This was a real comfort for me as they had been cooped up in hotels and airports for such a long time, it was great that they had a place they could stretch their legs and play outside. We stayed in a room with 3 single beds and a double bed and there was still room for a small table in between the beds. The accommodation is located 200 meters from the main shopping strip of Zakopane. There you can find plenty of handmade crafts and traditional Polish souvenirs. A traditional Polish restaurant, UWanka is located 20 meters away and serves excellent Polish fare. The owners seemed to only speak Polish, but communication was manageable and still extremely friendly. The breakfast the owners serve is a must, best breakfast we have ever had at any accommodation anywhere and there is no way you will need lunch after it!

Why we loved it:

I absolutely loved this home. It just felt like you were so welcome and even though we didn’t speak the same language it did not feel uncomfortable at all. The girls loved it for the space and play equipment. I have heard from some families that children are rarely catered for but in this instance they both felt like they were home. And as we said before the breakfast was AMAZING!!

  • Garden
  • Shared Kitchen

LISBON:
LISBON HISTORIC APARTMENT

Lisbon Historic Apartment is located in a building just off Largo do Carmo Square in Central Lisbon. We stayed on the fourth floor (there was no elevator, but we were lucky enough that our host helped us carry all our luggage up to the apartment!) in a 3 bedroom apartment with kitchen, lounge room and balcony. The size of the apartment was very spacious and comfortably fitted the four of us with plenty of room to spare. The girls had separate rooms and they loved that as they had been sharing every tiny piece of space we had for the last few weeks, they could finally spread out in their own space!  The hosts were fantastic and suggested many activities and they also provided a large array of tourist information pamphlets which we found so helpful. Largo do Carmo is located only 100 meters away where you will find many restaurants to eat or relax with a drink. There is a small convenience store located on the street 50 meters away from the apartment which has almost everything you will need. The opening hours are split through the day so if you are wandering past grab what you need!  Rossio Train Station is located 200 meters away with access to direct trains to Sintra. Lisbon Historic Apartments we considered to be one of the best places we have stayed in Europe. (Read our review of the Largo Do Carmo area here).

Why we loved it:

I could go on forever about how much we loved it! The thing that stuck out for me was the help we received from the hosts. We had maps and Rita went through so much with us so we felt confident about traveling the city. It was really clean, it was big and we all had our own space that we could go to! It was just a fantastic place to stay! This was probably our favourite family accommodation.

ROMAN FORUM APARTMENT

This apartment is located on via Cavour just 500 meters away from the Colosseum. The apartment is located on the 4th floor and because of the age of the buildings there, there is no elevator access. Cavour Metro Station is located just out the front of the apartment which is great for family accommodation access. The apartment is to the side of the building there is no noise from the station. Although the apartment is up on the fourth floor there is no view out of the windows. This is a small one bedroom apartment with a sofa bed for the kids in the lounge area. PORTO:

HOTEL DO NORTE

This hotel is amazingly assessable from Porto airport by rail connection. As you walk out of Bolhoa Metro Station the hotel is looking straight at you. A Shopping Center is located 100 meters away and the Mercado do Bolhoa Market is 100 meters in the other direction. There is a main pedestrian Shopping Mall featuring many restaurants and retail outlets running adjacent to the side of the hotel. There are also so many little family run restaurants dotted all the way down Rua de Santa Catarina. The family room contained a double bed and two singles and was still quite spacious. There was a small fridge and TV in the room as was air conditioning. Because of the balcony access during the day we could leave the big windows open and let the air in. Public transport options are close by with the metro and bus stops.

Why we loved it:

There was just so much to see all the time. We were there on the celebration of Sao Paulo so the girls watched what was going on from the balcony. It was clean and well run with our room cleaned every day. That was something the girls thought was really crazy!

TALLINN:
OLD TOWN MAESTRO

Old Town Maestro is located on the edge of the Unesco protected Tallinn Old Town. Old Town Maestro featured quite large rooms with a queen size bed and a sofa bed for the kids which was already pre-prepared for us. The room featured a desk and lounge chairs as well as a small coffee table that the girls used to play games and put toys on. Breakfast was available and we ate there most mornings as there was something that we all liked!  The Old Town of Tallinn is a stone throw away and has so many places to eat and shop for traditional Estonian crafts. We ate at Route 56 restaurant straight over the street from the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The people there were friendly and really tried their best to accommodate the girls and their fussy eating habits, which we were very grateful for. There is a supermarket located in a shopping center 500 meters away. Tallinn Tourist Hop On, Hop Off bus stop is located just around the corner from the hotel.

Why we loved it:

It was actually the first hotel room we had stayed it that was large enough for all of us and with heaps of room to spare! It was really clean and I loved that the sofa bed was already made for us. In most places because the room was so small it would have to be packed up every morning but with Old Town Maestro it could stay made! The girls thought it was awesome that it was re-made for them every morning and their dolls would be propped up on their pillows. It was that tiny touch that made their days! Perfect family accommodation.

Features:

  • Bar
  • Breakfast
  • Laundry
  • refrigerator
