On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb exploded about 600 meters above the ground and destroyed nearly everything within a 2-kilometre radius of the explosion site. Tens of thousands of people were killed instantly or died soon after from injuries or radiation exposure.
