Airports are not created equal that’s for sure. Anyone who has dragged children from city to city country to country knows the importance of a Kids play area at airports. This can help with that one shred of sanity that is needed to carry on when kids have done nothing but complain and moan those 3 words that all parents know too well  “I am bored” dad and the other 5 words I hate  “there is nothing to do” Mum.

It’s a long day when travelling by plane through an airport, the time it takes to get the bags ready, the trip to the airport, check-in time,  the waiting time for boarding the plane it is all dead time that allows kids to get restless and unfocused.

Our daughter Marley gets particularly crazy when waiting to check in, starts annoying her sister which annoys their mother and pretty soon we have a stressful situation building faster than the line to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

In a child-friendly, family orientated world,  all airports should have play area’s or entertainment for kids, and ideally for dad’s it should be near somewhere you can get a beer. A message chair for Mum’s would also be handy. Alternatively, make sure you have things to keep them entertained in the children’s hand luggage

As a family, we have travelled through 50 plus international airports, mainly in Europe, Asia and Australia and few more when we were without children. Listed below are the airports we have travelled and a few short sentences about Kids play area’s that are or are not located at these airports.

My 4-year old always asks “are we going to Singapore airport?” when we head off on holiday. Hong Kong airport needs to step up its game! We’ve also recently played in airport playgrounds in Heathrow T5 and Christchurch, NZ.

  9. I’m from Singapore and have always felt we have one of the most kids-friendly airports in the world! But the Amsterdam and Barcelona ones sound pretty cool. The other airport I love and can spend a whole day there is New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Japan.

  10. Wow what a great list, saving some of these ideas. Changi has this market hands down but competition definitely creeping in from Hamad International in Doha

  12. This is a great list Mark. I don’t have little kids, but was impressed with what some of the airports have. I am not that well-traveled but hope to be. Singapore sounds great. We will be flying in to Rome so thanks for the heads up on that being not well organized. I didn’t realize what all different airports had available.

  13. We love travel and can’t wait for the kids are just a little older to do lots more. As much we try to avoid Mac Donalds, sometimes they have play areas at airports attached to their “restaurants”.
