Japan’s railways are genuinely impressive, the Shinkansen (bullet train) can hit 320 km/h, and the whole system runs on time with a level of reliability most countries can only dream of.
One thing worth knowing before you assume you need a Japan Rail Pass: the price jumped by around 70% in October 2023, and for a Tokyo-focused trip (or even a simple Tokyo-Kyoto round trip), it often no longer pays for itself compared to just buying individual Shinkansen tickets. It’s worth doing the maths on your specific route before buying, it still makes sense if you’re stringing together several long-distance legs, but it’s no longer an automatic yes.
