Surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings and the bustling roads of Sukhumvit and Sukhumvit 71 is the WMarket in Bangkok, Thailand. We stumbled on this gem of a place after exploring the neighbourhood where we are staying.

The WMarket is a local hub of Thai foodie delights for residents and tourists near the Phra Khanong BTS station in Sukhumvit. The Phra Khanong area is a popular living spot for both locals and expats with its easy connection to the centre of Bangkok.

The WMarket – the newest foodie hotspot in Bangkok

The WMarket creates its own atmosphere with cool music, fairy lights the sizzle of woks and the chatter of both locals and expatriates. As you walk in you are greeted by the smell of Indian food, BBQ skewers, seafood and some eccentric sculptures.

The inviting WMarket

This atmosphere is enhanced by the mix of people you find here. It’s not uncommon to hear people speaking Thai, Chinese, English, Russian, Spanish and more.

People shuffle their way around the small area checking out what the local food stalls are selling. They are trying to make their mind between local Thai delights or international flavours like Indian and Chinese at stalls such as Peri Peri Flaming Chicken, Thai Food 71, Greek Bistro, Thai Seafood and the Chilli Bowl.

The great part is you can get small plates from several different sellers and try a few of the foods on offer.

Some of the sights you will find at the WMarket

For families with fussy kids or teenagers staying in Bangkok, this place is a godsend catering to every taste. While parents can enjoy their favourite Stir Fry or Pad Thai, the kids can enjoy fast food at Smash and Grab burgers and French fries at La Frite.

Take time to kick back and relax at the WMarket

We visited the W Market on several occasions while visiting Bangkok to soak up the relaxed and casual atmosphere and enjoy being out of the hustle and bustle of the streets. It’s a great place to decompress and chat about the Bangkok tourist attractions you have seen..

Some nights you may find a live band and entertainment to keep you occupied, while one other nights the prevailing cool breeze that flows through is good enough. The two bars in the market are popular, selling a combination of local beers, European giants, cocktails and fruit smoothies. We started with a Paulaner from Germany and Hoegaarden from Belgium before moving on to a few cocktails.

Be warned the price of foreign beers can be steep, we paid around AUD 15 for Paulaner and Hoegaarden at this Bangkok bar, mind you it was worth it, they were so nice on a hot day in Bangkok.

No need to leave your table for drinks, as the staff are constantly walking around taking orders.

While at the WMarket we had Indian food. From Breads and Curries, a Lamb Plate from the Greek Bistro, Chicken Skewers with Salad from The Corner, Chicken Kebabs from Shwarma Me and Stir-Fried Vegetables and Rice from Chinese food. All in all, we loved all the food we had at WMarket Phra Khanong.

You will find the prices are a little more expensive than local restaurants on the street, but the atmosphere makes up for it.

There is no need to eat at shopping centre food courts or be squashed onto little stools at the famous Bangkok Markets. This outdoor food court, just steps from the BTS station with its comfortable seating and attentive service, makes it an ideal spot for longer, relaxed meals.

The surrounding market has several other food options and is known as the WDistrict. To get to the market, take the BTS Sky train to Phra Khanong Station. From here, walk down Sukhumvit Road in the direction of On-Nut, or look for the two tallest buildings in the area (WMarket is at the foot of them). Around a 200-metre walk from the BTS, you’ll see the WDistrict Market sign as above.

Make sure you visit the WMarket to experience where traditional street food meets international flavours.
