Melbourne is our closest city, and to be honest, we love it. We live 3 hours away, so our visit to Melbourne is always jam-packed with things to do.

Table of Contents

We try to plan a few trips there every year, whether it’s for a shopping trip, a concert, a sporting event, to eat delicious food, or just to see what’s on in the city.

With a bustling population nearing 4 million, Melbourne is Australia’s beating heart of sports and culture. There is no better city in the world to visit with teenagers than Melbourne.

Melbourne with teenagers

What frustrates me about other blog posts about Melbourne is that they include so many activities away from the city, not just 20 minute from the city but hours and hours by car.

They aren’t accessible by public transport, and you have to have a hire car to see it all. I have tried my best to get all of the best activities in Melbourne for teens, or ones that can be easily accessed by public transport, that WILL NOT take all day to get there.

Quick Public Transport Guide to Melbourne:

Melbourne Public Transport has a card called a myki. You will need these if you are going to venture out of the CBD area. The CND area has a free tram zone that you can use but if you haventure even one stop out of this area you will need a myki.

You can get a Myki from any 7-11 Convenience Store, Flinders street station or if you are an Australian resident you can order one and have it delivered.

A minimum of $10 needs to be put on the card to activate it. You can top up online or at the stop that you are at. It doesn;t take long but it is easier to do it online so you are not left at the station trying.

You will need a myki if you plan to go to St Kilda for Luna Park or even out to Belgrave for Puffing Billy.

The myki can be used on trains and trams as well as buses. The good thing about it is the maximum amount you can pay for a day is $11.

With a little planning and these exciting ideas, Melbourne awaits your unforgettable family adventure!

Things to do in Melbourne with teenagers

As I have said above, it frustrates me with most things to do in Melbourne posts is that they will include places that are well and truly out of the city…even as far as including Puffing Billy. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a steam train ride about an hour from the city in a place called Belgrave.

In this post we have included as many easy to access activities in Melboure for families that can be accessed by the Free City Tram or one stop passed it.

There will be activities in Melbourne for young adults that are suitable just outside of the city in easily accessible suburbs and I have included them. I have made sure that the suburb is included too for complete transparency.

Melbourne City Circle Tram (Melbourne CBD)

This is a great and easy way to see the city and get an idea of what is around. It is an old W Class tram that has been restored and maintained so people can see what transport was like back in the 1920’s. That is the original one but it is such a popular tram (and free) that there are now others that are newer and run the same route.

You’ll find that it stops at the majority of the top sights and gives constant warnings when it is about to exit the free tram zone. It’s also a great introduction on how our public transport system works if you are first first-timer to Melbourne.

Federation Square (Fed Square)

You’ll see this iconic building design on many of the tourist pamphlets. It’s mish mash of shapes and colours but it has some of the best free activities in the city held at it. You find cultural festivals held in the courtyard area which are great free activities in Melbourne for families.

If there is food involved the food vans will be located on the right of Fed Square along the Yarra River Walk. There is not a lot of seating along there but some of the food vans will have stools at the front.

ACMI (located at Federation Square)

Absolutely brilliant if you are a movie buff or an aspiring digital creator. ACMI stands for Australian Centre for the Moving Image and here you can find a plethora of activities.

From cinemas showing short indi films to interactive displays you can spend a few hours here just enjoying amazing Australian creators. There are free exhibits and paid areas but you have the choice as to what you would like to see.

Flinders Street Station (across from Fed Square)

While there is not much to see here unless you love trains the facade is world famous and a great picture for you to have.

People used to say I will meet you under the clocks and it would mean they would meet you on the steps of Flinders Street Station under the clocks. They are still there, and another great picture to have. Try to get back there at night too, as it looks completely different all lit up.

St Paul’s Cathedral (across from Flinders Street)

We are not religious people to be honest but we do lke to visit churches and find out the history behind them when we are in other cities. Neither of us have visited St Paul’s so we thought we should go in when we were there last.

It’s a beautiful cathedral and well worth a look. Please remember though, it is a working church and people are there to pray and worship.

Street Art in Melbourne

Melbourne is renowned for its vibrant street art scene, making it a must-explore for teens. Get your cameras ready and wander through the city’s many laneways, where walls are adorned with colorful murals, thought-provoking stencils, and creative installations.

I won’t lie and tell you they are all amazing and you will love them all because you won’t. Some will be graffitied and unfortunately some will smell like someone has used them as a toilet. Be prepared to look past the mess and enjoy the art.

Some spots to have a look at are:

  • Hosier Lane: Considered the holy grail of Melbourne street art, Hosier Lane, near Federation Square,
  • Explore hidden gems like AC/DC Lane, Croft Alley, and Meyers Place, each with its own unique artistic flair.
  • There are also some large murals near Southern Cross Station

Banksy in Melbourne: Head to Duckboard Place to see a remnant of Melbourne’s street art history – one of the last remaining Banksy rats. While its authenticity remains debated, it’s a noteworthy piece for any street art enthusiast.

Buskers in Bourke Street

Bourke Street was once a bustling pedestrian mall with some of the world’s top shops calling it home but COVID changed a lot of that and now you will see plenty of the shops empty.

This does not stop some amazing buskers from delighting anyone who would like to take a minute to listen. You can get a nice drink or a sandwhich along Swanston Street and sit down on one of the seats to enjoy.

Performing Arts Center

Seeing shows and experincing theatre in another city is a brillaint way to open your teens eyes to performances that they may not be able to see if your city. The Melbourne Performing Art Centre has some amazing local and worldwide shows that visit and are a great way to spend an evening with your teen.

You can see plenty of different types for performances from Opera to Ballet, Contemporary dances to interviews with experts in their fields.

Many people come here to be able to see Indidgenous performances as well which are related to local customs from the Victorian areas.

The Australian Music Vault – Arts Center Melbourne

Australia has a brilliant music scene with many of our performers making it big here but maybe not becoming as successful overseas. We have played many of our faves when travelling overseas, and we are always asked who they are, and we are even happier to share their music.

Here you can find plenty of our most successful artists and their memorabilia that they have shared. Great to introduce yourself to our pop princess and pub rock.

Things to do in Melbourne for teens – Eureka Skydeck

Experience some of the best views in the Southern hemisphere buying tickets online in advance will avoid queues, especially during peak season or school holidays.

Eureka Skydeck is located on Southbank near Crown Casino. It is one of the highest viewing platforms in the southern hemisphere and offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Melbourne from 300 metres above the city streets..

Visiting Eureka Skydeck is a brilliant activity, but if you are afraid of heights like myself, it may be one that will need some extra planning and time

Combine with Southbank: After taking in the views, explore the vibrant Southbank precinct. This lively neighborhood offers restaurants, cafes, shops, and cultural attractions, making it a great place to spend an afternoon.

Karaoke – at Crown Casino (Southbank)

Unleash your inner rockstar with one of the best things to do in Melbourne for young adults…Karaoke at Juke! Head to Juke Karaoke, located within the Crown Casino complex on Southbank, where you can hire a private karaoke studio and belt out all the hits you love.

We found it great that we could order drinks and snacks and have them delivered to our studio while we were singing. It was a great afternoon activity in Melbourne and one that we still laugh about, especially when the songs we played come on the radio or our streaming apps.

Sealife Aquarium

Save money in Melbourne: Why not book a combo ticket with entry to both Sealife Melbourne + Artvo Melbourne and save some money on entries

While this attraction might cater more towards younger children, teens can still appreciate the stunning exhibits featuring penguins, sharks, stingrays, and tropical fish.

For a more in-depth experience, consider participating in a paid animal encounter program, like diving with the sharks (restrictions apply).

Plan your visit around the daily talks and feeding demonstrations, offering a chance to witness animal behaviour up close and gain insights from knowledgeable zookeepers.

While SEA LIFE Melbourne might not be the sole focus for teens, it can be a fun and educational stop, especially if combined with other activities.

Helicopter ride over Melbourne city

For the ultimate adrenaline rush and a truly unique perspective of Melbourne, consider a thrilling helicopter ride! Located near SEA LIFE Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River, helicopter tour companies offer breathtaking aerial adventures that will leave your teens speechless.

A helicopter ride over Melbourne is an unforgettable experience that will leave your teens with lasting memories. The breathtaking views, the thrill of flight, and the unique perspective of the city will undoubtedly be a highlight of your Melbourne adventure!

Here you can learn about Victoria’s Aboriginal Culture, see the dinosaur exhibition and learn about Melbourne’s transition from a colonial settlement to the wonderful, vibrant city it is today.

Check out the Museum’s website for any of the additional exhibitions that they host throughout the year. We’ve been to a few that they have hosted and they are fabulous.

IMAX at the Melbourne Museum

The Melbourne Museum IMAX Theatre showcases stunning documentaries and films on a giant screen, transporting viewers to breathtaking locations and igniting curiosity about the world around us.

Visit the Melbourne Zoo (Parkville)

Did you know you can even have a sleepover experience at the Zoo?

Zoo’s are a difficult subject to talk about as many over the world have a bad reputation and to be honest they are falling out of favour with many people.

The Melbourne Zoo is world-renowned for its ethical treatment of animals, and Australia has some of the toughest rules for the treatment of animals in situations like this. Melbourne Zoo is known to also have numerous breeding programs that focus on the endangered species of animals, both for native animals and for others from all over the world.

Here teens can learn about animal conservation efforts that are being done at the Zoo and see the incredible diversity of the animal kingdom.

If you are short on time, you can download the zoo map and plan your route beforehand to ensure you see all your favourite animals. The zoo offers a variety of talks, demonstrations, and keeper presentations throughout the day, so check the schedule for interesting activities.

Old Melbourne Gaol

For teens interested in history and a touch of the macabre, the Old Melbourne Gaol is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the city, this former prison, operational from 1845 to 1929, is now a museum offering a chilling glimpse into 19th-century Melbourne’s justice system.

You can explore the gaol’s various cell blocks and wings, including the infamous death row where legendary figures like outlaw Ned Kelly awaited their execution. One of the gaol’s most chilling attractions is the original gallows and hangman’s rope, a stark reminder of the harsh realities of capital punishment in the past.

You should be aware that there are some exhibits that can spark some uncomfortable discussions about the past and how some things were done back then. OUr girls were full of questions and at timeswe could not answer then without having to really think about the subject and delivery.

*There are special tours and activities that are held for children over the school holidays so this may be a great way to see the Gaol as well. Check their website for what they have planned.

Old Melbourne Gaol Ghost tours:

If you really want to delve deep into the Ghosts and tales that the Gaol holds you can go on a daytome or nighttine Ghost tour of the melbourne Gaol. We did a daytime on as I did not wat to do one in the night.

If you do choose a night time ghost tour please be aware that you will need to attend with your teens as ther can be some scary details shared.

Get arrested at the City Watch House

When you plan to visit the Melbourne Gaol you will ahve an option to add Life in the City Watch House to the tour. We did this and the girls thought it was really interesting.

The Watch House takes you through the process of when you are arrested and considering every person arrested in Melbourne from 1904 to 1994 was held here there is a lot of history and stories that can be told!

Ghost Tours in Melbourne

While the ghost tours in the Melbourne Gaol are some of the most popular, you will find plenty more dotted around the city. Melbourne has a long history and some seriously dark times that you will learn all about on a ghost tour.

You can join a group tour and wander through the city’s haunted hotspots with a local guide who shares local legends and chilling ghost stories. Guides will often dress in period costumes, adding an extra layer of spookiness to the tour.

Ghost Tours in Melbourne

Check out some of these ghost tour companies offering spine-tingling adventures in Melbourne:

Victorian Parliament – Parliament House

You can tour the Victorian Parliament House when it is not in session. There is also a rooftop garden (more located out the back) where you have brilliant views of St Paul’s Cathedral, a High Tea you can book and a restaurant on site.

Victorian State Library

A glorious spot to spend a little bit of time if the Melbourne weather is not being nice. You can come in here and stand time wandering the galleries and getting picture sof the beautiful architecture. Ned Kelly’s armour is also located here.

* Across the road is the #1000 bakery. They ahve the most amazing looking cakes and pastries for you to try.

Rooftop Bars in Melbourne

If you are travelling to melbourne with younga adults over the age of 18 you can visit one of the amazing rooftops bars. Some have views and some don’t but they all have a different vibe and style that makes then a great activity.

Some will allow you to bring minors in, but if there is one you desperately want to visit, I would ask in advance. We have visited some late in the afternoon rather than early evening, before they get busy with the girls when they were underage, which was ok. Just double-check before you get comfortable.

* You must remember that ID stating your age is a requirement in Australia if you want to enter a licensed venue. If you don;t ahve proof of age they won’t let you in and if you thinks it won’t happen to you…it happened to PINK and she was denied entry to a venue so it will and can happen.

Queen Vic Market

Our go to spot for a good feed and some souviner shopping when we are visiting overseas. The Queen Vic has 4 distinct areas the food hall, meat hall, fruit and veg pavilion and the shopping pavilion. It is currently undergoing renovations to the pavilions but you cna shop just as easily as usual.

If you are staying in melbourne for a long time you can shop here for fresh food or pick up delicious treats for later. We always get some fresh dips, bread and cheese to take home with us, but it does not last long once we get there! You can get so many other things like olives,

If you need some help with carrying all of the items you love, you can hire a little trolley to walk around with, but it must be returned before you leave. You will need a form of ID to hire it, and a $50 refundable deposit before you can hire one

A trip to Queen Victoria Market offers a chance to explore Melbourne’s vibrant food scene and discover something new.

For us, while we are there, we get a coffee, chicken ribs, borek, and the girls love the lemon yoghurt from one of the stalls (it tastes like the cheesecake I make at home)

Alternative foodie market:

If you have time, consider exploring the South Melbourne Market, another renowned market known for its high-quality produce, specialty stores, and delicious food options.

South Melbourne market:

We’ve listed this as an alternative market to the Queen Vic, but it is just as good. If you love fresh seafood, you can order fresh, shucked oysters from the Oyster Bar and eat them right there. You’ll have to fight for a spot at the bench, but it’s worth it.

There is also a delicious Yabech and Borek store in the food hall and some seriously divine donuts at the // store. You’ll find more artsy and independently made products at the South Melbourne Market than the mass-produced things at the Queen Vic.

Take a trip around the world:

This is so easy in Melbourne. It is such a multi-cultural city that you will find so many different cuisines from around the world.

Pentridge Prison (Coburg)

Pentridge is lcoated in Coburg

HM Prison Pentridge may not be a place to visit for everyone, but for some, the history here is worth looking at. As a kid, it was a place that only came up on the news for the worst of the worst, so it was not spoken of often.

Now you can tour the prison, which opened in 1851 and its heritage-listed buildings. There is also a section where you can stay the night, but I am unsure I could actually do that
