Today we are going to give you an honest, no-frills review of the Ohana Palace Hotel near the riverside in Phnom Penh. This won’t be your everyday review that you read about hotels.

We’re going to talk about things that really matter in hotels like accessibility, Wi-Fi speeds, is the room noisy, how dark is it in the morning ands more. Could this be one of the best places to stay in Phnom Penh.

Where is the Ohana Palace Hotel located?

Address: 4&6 Street 148 Phsar Kandal Phnom Penh, Phnom Penh 12204, Cambodia

Price: We paid $90AUD per night.

What you see from the street of the Ohana Palace Hotel

The Ohana Palace Hotel’s location puts you right in the heart of the action in Phnom Penh, making it a great choice for tourists visiting the capital of Cambodia. The hotel has easy access to all the sites in the city. This was one of the big attractions of the hotel for us.

Directly opposite the hotel, you will find a laundry, day spa and small convenience store. There are always Tuk Tuks waiting to take you around the city, while on the corner near the riverside is Harry’s which serves good priced beer and cocktails.

How close is everything?

Phnom Penh is city we loved exploring from it vibrant cafe scene to Unesco World Heritage sites. We found the Ohana an ideal place to access all the best things Phnom Penh has to offer.

The Jasmine Spa Laundry over the road is helpful if you’re staying a few days, we paid $2 Australian per kilo, where the hotel wanted that for 1 shirt. While the Tuk Tuks are out the door waiting, it’s better to use Grab (Asian equivalent of Uber) or atleast get a price from Grab first so you know you’re not getting ripped off on a ride fare.

Just 50 meters away is the riverside where the Phnom Penh night market is held every weekend and there are plenty of places to eat and drink for lunch and dinner. A few doors up is Harry’s Bistro and Cafe which we went to a number of times. The drinks at Harry’s were cheap with draught beer being $1.50 USD and Long Island Ice Teas $2USD. Make sure you order some spring rolls they were amazing.

Ohana Palace Hotel first impression

So the location is excellent. Now, what were our first impressions? The lobby is clean, the staff seem really friendly and the AC is definitely working, which in the Cambodian heat is absolutely essential.

What did we think of the Ohana Palace Hotel?

Let’s get into the real stuff, what was the hotel itself like?

What is the hotel’s accessibility like?

The hotel had both steps and a ramp leading into the front door, which is great for people in wheel chairs and with mobility issues. There are lifts taking you up to your rooms from the lobby that would easily fit a wheel chair.

Where the hotel fails is with accessibility to the top floor where breakfast is served. There is no lift access, you need to walk up two flights of stairs, not ideal for people with mobility issues. The ground floor pool has a single step that needs to be navigated to get to the poolside.

The hotel lets itself down with no accessibility to the rooftop, which is a standout feature of the hotel, while being friendly enough for hotel and room entry. The rooftop has a restaurant, bar and pool that you can’t access if you have mobility issues.

Room size and layout:

Our room was a good size and resembled what it looked like when we booked through Booking.com. We had a large (king size) bed, which was pretty firm, I must say. The room had a small table and lounge chair, TV and a good amount of power outlets.

There was cupboard space for you to unpack, a room safe and of course robes and slippers. All pretty standard stuff you would expect in any hotel.

What was on Tv at the Ohana Palace Hotel

The TV had a large selection of channels, including international channels such as ABC Australia. The room was comfortable enough that we spent some time inside most afternoons to escape the heat.

Did the air conditioning work well?

The AC was amazing and needs to be in Phnom Penh where temperatures hover around the mid 30’s (mid 90’s Fahrenheit). The air conditioner works when you insert your room card into the power slot, which means the room gets warm while you’re out. I always bring an old room card I have at home to leave in the power slot, which keeps the aircon working while you’re out of the room.

What was the water pressure like in the shower

The bathroom had a shower bath combination, which would be hard to get in and out of if you had mobility issues. The water pressure was actually pretty good and the temperature was either nice and warm or nice and cool.

The toilet was next to the shower, which makes it hard to use the toilet if someone is showering. Like most Asians, there was a toilet gun attached. It has some serious pressure about it, so you need to be very careful there if you’re not used to using one.

Was there street noise?

A little bit at night, with cars and horns from the nearby street, but not enough to keep you from getting a good night’s sleep. That being said, we go to bed around 10, which is still pretty early in the evening.

How dark was the room at night?

We found the room to be pitch black at night and in the morning after the sun comes up. Good quality thick drapes help keep any light out of the room as long as you make sure they’re pulled closed properly.

Was Ohana Palace Hotel any good?

We found the Wi-Fi here at the Ohana Palace Hotel pretty good. You could easily browse social media, post photos and watch YouTube. I ran a speed test, which showed the Wi-Fi speed coming down at around 79 megabits per second. It was reliable and I didn’t notice any dropouts.

Did breakfast at Ohana Palace meet our expectations?

The breakfast wasbuffet style with a number of bain-maries, breads, pastries and fruits available. There was good mix of western foods such as pancakes and asian foods like noodles and rice dishes.

Breakfast at hotel Ohana Palace was on the rooftop

Like all hotels, there was an egg station where you could get omelettes, fried and poached eggs to your liking. To be honest, the food in the Bain-Marie was only lukewarm, but experience has taught us that unless you’re staying at a brand hotel such as IHG or Accor, the breakfast is generally only so-so at independent hotels and Ohan was no different.

Bars and happy hours at the Phnom Penh Ohana Palace

Drinks were served in two areas, by the pool on the ground floor and on the rooftop. When we stayed, there were two happy hours a day. We tried a number of cocktails such as the Blue Lagoon, a Gin Fizz and a Black Russian. We had some Mojitos, which are Bec’s favorites, while I had a number of Long Island Iced Teas.

The hotel had 2 happy hours a day. One was at Poolside (2‑4 pm) and one on the Rooftop (5‑7 pm). The happy hour special was two for the price of one, which we took full advantage of. Nothing beats an affordable cocktail.

We enjoyed the Ohana Palace Hotel rooftop bar location where you could watch boats cruising down the river, and the bar and drinks scene was really good.

Ohana Palace Swimming Pools

One of the things that first attracted us to the hotel were the pictures of the rooftop pool area that we saw on Booking.com. The hotel has two pools that look really inviting and seem to be standout features of the hotel.

One pool is on the ground floor and one pool is on the rooftop. The pool on the ground floor is quite large while on the roof top there are two small pools about the size of large hot tubs. The roof pool has amazing views of the Mekong River and the Royal Palace

The roof pools are more for sitting and relaxing while enjoying the views of the city. The ground floor pool, which can be used for mild exercise as it’s more sizable like a resort pool you would find at many hotels, is also available.

The ground pool is somewhat sheltered from the sun and elements. We found the water to be quite cold, cold enough that we didn’t spend much time in the water and instead opted for a cocktail on the sunlounge.
